Real-Kid Reviews

I promise, these are absolutely real, honest emails and letters I've received from real kids...and occasionally some grown-ups, too. (It's okay if you don't want to tell me your name or age.)

Do you AGREE or DISAGREE?

"I am reading PERFECT GIRL right now and it is ahmazing!!!! I can really relate to what Ruthie is going through. Thank you so much for writing this book! I am going to read THE SERIOUS KISS next."

                                                -- Lindsay, No Age Given

Thank you, Lindsay! Sorry it took so long to post this wonderful review. (You're probably done with THE SERIOUS KISS by now!) I've been working on a new blog. Not teen stuff, per se, but you may like it. If you want, the blog link is at the top of the page.

"PRETTY FACE! I bought your book from a Borders that was going out of business and I must say this book is ah-mazing! So many times I wanted to rip the page I was reading out and plaster it to my wall because everything the character felt and said is my life and I am 22!! Thank you for writing this book it did so much for my soul. I am a writer also and I would love to begin a correspondence with you about my book. PRETTY FACE was written for me, a plus size teenager, and now woman who still has to be reminded I am so much more than a pretty face because everything I am has beauty. God richly bless and prosper your life. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"

Perfect Girl by Mary Hogan

From Amazon: Out of the blue, Ruthie has fallen in love with the boy next door, Marcus. He's suddenly grown up and made her heart go thwang, and Ruthie has no idea what to do about it. Then new girl, Jenna, shows up at school, and Ruthie realizes she has to do something, and fast. Jenna is perfect, from her perfectly straight hair to her perfectly manicured toes. Marcus has noticed her, too, and worse, Jenna has noticed him right back. Ruthie knows she has to call her aunt, New York's "Goddess of Love." If Aunt Marty, romance columnist and woman of the world, can't turn Ruthie into a perfect girl, no one can... but she might also turn Ruthie's entire world upside down.

I really like Mary Hogan's books; they're short, fun and to the point. Although Perfect Girl's description puts a lot of emphasis on turning into a perfect person, there's not actually much focus on that in the book, and instead it's more about family and accepting yourself as you are.

Perfect Girl has quite a simple plot, but it's one that works well. The romance is sweet, the family relationships are realistic, and the small town life is endearing. I didn't feel like I got to know the characters well enough, although I did have a favourite: the mysterious old Mr. Arthur. He reminded me of a sweet old Grandad, and he provided some much needed company for Ruthie and her mother. Aunt Marty was also a well-rounded character, with hidden problems of her own to work through. I liked how she was supposed to have the perfect life, when in actual fact she was experiencing set backs just like everyone else.

Hogan's writing was humourous and enjoyable, and she's definitely got the knack when it comes to writing for teenagers. I finished this book with a smile on my face, just like I did when I read her previous novel The Serious Kiss, and am looking forward to seeing what this author comes up with next. Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be an uplifting read that people of all ages will find themselves relating to.

Pretty Face

Review

Rating:  5 Cups

Sunny southern California, where a beautiful beach body is practically a mandate, is absolute torture for Hayley. She buries her pain in food and self-deprecating humor, which only exacerbates her weight problem.

A true friend is a precious gift, and Jackie has been her best friend forever. Smart as a whip, funny, and willow-thin, Jackie is everything Hayley wants to be, but jealousy aside, they love each other like sisters.

Hayley wants more than anything to have Drew Wyler as her boyfriend, but when he asks her about Jackie, her heart plummets like a rock. Always the funny girl with the pretty face, but never the girlfriend, has taken its toll in pounds of cookies, candy and pizza that wrap themselves like a comforter around her heart. Enough is enough and Hayley jumps at the opportunity to leave it all behind to spend the summer in Italy with a friend of her mother’s. This is her chance to find the Hayley she knows is hiding beneath the layer of fat, and maybe if she is lucky she can find a summer romance as well.

This is a story that cuts right to the heart if you can relate to Hayley in any way. Her weight problem is something that I have a hard time not climbing on my soapbox about. I am a huge believer in exercise, and parent’s complicity in their children’s weight problems, and Hayley is a prime example. It is an interesting case in point that when she gets away from her overbearing mother, she feels free enough to conquer her weight issues. I whole-heartedly recommend this to any teen, boy or girl, who struggles with their weight like Hayley, because once you can feel for yourself, you can set yourself free.

About SUSANNA LOVES LONDON:

"You just cannot dislike these little books. They're as fresh and breezy and bright

as Susanna herself. "

                                                                                                                                                   --  The Bookbag

About SUSANNA COVERS THE CATWALK:

"A great read from start to finish."

                                            -- Britain Newspaper Review

"This latest yarn is definitely the best yet."

                                  -- Books Monthly

"An easy, fun read that I whizzed through, and thoroughly enjoyed thanks to the slapstick comedy, the juicy setting (it's all veryDevil Wears Prada) and the great writing. Susanna is appealing to the ordinary girl who dreams of doing something different. Each book has a new adventure, from a trip to Hollywood to a stint in London."

                                                       --  The Bookbag

About PRETTY FACE:

"Hayley commands a sharp wit and delivers smart insights. Like Hayley, readers will question an American culture that is both thin-obsessed and dependent on fast food and cars, but this novel is not so much issues-oriented as a conduit of vicarious pleasure."

                                                               -- Publishers Weekly

"Another winner from Mary Hogan! Wonderful, moving, warm, witty and truly romantic."

                                                             -- Gateway, World of Books

"This is such a lovely book. The people are pleasant, their messages simple, and the food just sounds divine. It’s a book I would have loved to read when I spent the summer alone in Italy as a 17 year old, though I might have ended up quite jealous of the adventures Hayley has."

                                             -- The Bookbag

About SUSANNA HITS HOLLYWOOD:

2008 Nappa Gold Winner!

"Award-winner parents will love."

                                                                                          -- WashingtonParent.com

"Without giving away her hilarious misadventures, know that the story unfolds quickly and with lots of laughs. Only Susanna could find herself in such a mess, when really she had the best intentions the whole time."

                                                                                     -- teensreadtoo.com

About SUSANNA SEES STARS:

   U.S. Edition   U.K. Edition

"What helps set this book apart...is that it's fun and unpredictable, and Susanna is a great character. Right off the bat we see Susanna's intelligence when she finds a clever way to stand out from the pack."

                                                         -- KLIATT

"This book is filled with wonderful moments and terrific writing. I don't know if I am reliving a second childhood or what, but I have read and been impressed with more young adult fiction lately, and this book can definitely be added to that list. Mary Hogan writes a fabulous tale about an average teenage girl with big dreams and the guts and creativity to make them come true."

                                                  -- Rambles.net

"A refreshing change from all those teen books where the heroine is obsessed with dating and making an impression with one or more boys. Instead, Susanna uses her considerable initiative to land herself a summer internship. What ensues is hilariously funny with many one-liners."

                                                                                            - Gateway Monthly.com

About PERFECT GIRL:

"Hogan excels at young tenderness, such as Perry spooning Ruthie’s foot, and an enchanted day they spend together in D.C."

                                           --Kirkus

"Mary Hogan has given teenagers an "every girl" story that will have wide appeal."

                                                                                                            -- School Library Journal
